Mast Shop Technician

Job Overview

Tartan Yachts is seeking a full-time Mast Shop Technician responsible for the preparation, outfitting, and quality assurance of aluminum and carbon spars used in Tartan Yachts production sailboats. Working in close coordination with the rigging and production teams, this position ensures that each mast leaves the shop correctly wired, fitted, and ready for installation aboard a new Tartan yacht. Tartan offers a collaborative, craftsmanship-driven work environment with opportunities to grow within the production and rigging team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Receive, inspect, and inventory spar extrusions, fittings, and hardware from suppliers against purchase orders and build specifications
  • Lay out and cut mast sections to length; deburr, clean, and prep extrusions for fitting installation
  • Drill, tap, and install mast tangs, spreader brackets, gooseneck fittings, sheave boxes, and masthead assemblies per engineering drawings
  • Run and secure internal wiring and halyards including masthead light wiring, wind instrument cables, VHF antenna coax, and internal halyard sheaves
  • Install mast base plates, partners hardware, and keel-stepped base components to specification
  • Fabricate and install boom assemblies including outhaul systems, reefing hardware, and vang attachment points
  • Perform dimensional inspection and quality checks on completed spars against production drawings; document any non-conformances
  • Coordinate with the rigging team on standing rigging measurement, fabrication, and pre-attachment where applicable
  • Prepare spars for delivery or installation: protect extrusions, bundle associated hardware, and document completion status
  • Maintain a clean and organized mast shop; properly store spars and materials to prevent damage
  • Assist with mast stepping during commissioning and sea trial activities as needed

Qualifications / Requirements 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in spar building, rigging, or precision metal fabrication in a marine environment
  • Familiarity with aluminum spar extrusions, mast fittings, and sailboat standing rigging systems
  • Proficiency with drilling, tapping, and fitting installation in aluminum and stainless steel
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, rigging plans, and wire diagrams
  • Experience running and terminating coaxial cable and low-voltage wiring preferred
  • Strong attention to detail; commitment to dimensional accuracy and production quality standards
  • Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, and basic metalworking equipment
  • Ability to lift and maneuver 60+ lb spar sections; comfortable working in a production shop environment
  • Sailboat rigging experience or ABYC/rigging coursework a significant plus
