
Job Overview
Riverfront Marine is seeking a full-time Crane Operator. The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the yard’s travel lift, hydraulic trailer, and any supplemental lifting equipment used to haul out, launch, and move vessels throughout the boatyard. This safety-critical role requires certified crane and rigging competency, meticulous attention to load dynamics, and strong communication skills to coordinate with yard staff and vessel owners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate marine travel lift(s) and related hydraulic equipment to haul out and launch vessels up to the rated capacity of yard equipment
- Inspect slings, straps, shackles, and lifting hardware prior to each use; remove defective equipment from service and report to Yard Manager
- Properly position slings beneath vessel hull in consultation with owners, survey reports, or keel/hull documentation to avoid damage
- Move vessels within the yard using the travel lift, hydraulic trailer, and manual dollies; position and block vessels safely on stands and cradles
- Operate yard forklift(s) for materials handling, boat movement, and mast stepping
- Maintain a daily equipment inspection log; report mechanical concerns for prompt service
- Communicate clearly with ground crew, riggers, and vessel owners during all lifting operations
- Enforce safe work zone practices during lifts; ensure bystanders and non-essential personnel are clear
- Assist with yard maintenance, pressure washing, and general yard duties when lifting operations are not scheduled
- Maintain a clean, organized equipment bay; perform basic operator-level preventive maintenance
- Comply with all OSHA, state, and facility safety regulations pertaining to crane and heavy equipment operation
Qualifications / Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating a marine travel lift or equivalent crane/heavy equipment
- NCCCO or equivalent crane operator certification strongly preferred; must be obtainable within 90 days of hire
- Comprehensive understanding of rigging fundamentals: sling angles, load capacities, center of gravity
- Familiarity with vessel hull forms including full keel, fin keel, multi-hull, and power vessel configurations
- Strong spatial awareness and depth perception; ability to operate in tight yard environments
- Calm, methodical decision-making under pressure and in high-visibility situations
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL a plus
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in variable weather conditions
- Physical ability to climb travel lift, inspect equipment, and assist with blocking as needed
